Fertilization & Release

Fertilization is used in forestry to provide supplemental nutrients to produce more needles or leaves so that trees can grow at its maximum potential to produce more volume of wood in a shorter rotation.  Timing and prescriptions of fertilization can be different for different sites. The most common times of fertilization is at initial planting and at mid-rotation, but stands should be monitored and treatments applied when a deficiency is noticed.

A release treatment is when undesirable species are controlled to help free up nutrients for residual trees.  Often times, a release used in conjunction with other silviculture methods generates an excellent financial return.  In addition, a release treatment can be an effective method to improve wildlife habitat.
